Ahoy Bucaneers,
Let me introduce myself a little before writing on the real subject of this topic.
I’m Darkslimus, member of the team of the Ackmod, a french mod of COAS essentially based on quests and dynamical gameplay (ie dynamical quest and economy). The Ackmod is defunct now. I’m not a modder, essentially a sentence corrector and a betatester. Another of my hobbie is the translation of good mods I like to share with the french communauty who, as everyone know, is weird english speakers.
I translated the GOF 1.2 mod, a lot of mods for M&B and X3TC, and some other games during my player career. Some month ago I want to play back in Pirates universe and naturally I go back on our old defunct Ackmod, but the engine used is still the old buggy Storm and I let it, frustrated by the CTD problems.
I’ve bought TEHOS but not enjoyed, I find the new GOF : ERAS2 and I will thanks the team for the really good work have be done. I actually play the 2.7.0 and haven’t test the new version cause of my living situation.
I actually live in Senegal where provider are robbers and where you pay the access as consumed Data. monthly i earn for the equivalent of 40€ 25GB of Data access(in DL and UL combined), it’s why I don’t dl the new version, but it sounds so interesting than surely I dl it soon.
Like I said you on Steam MK, I want translate your work cause it is actually for me the best Pirate game and the new version seems to be more good. I hope you can add back the language selection of the multilanguage version so the translation can be directly include with the dl. It was some month ago, but I was returned back in France to visit friends and family and have no time to speak of that with you, know I have time and I come back to you.I see a thread on a Discord group but invitation link don’t work anymore
I can start to work on it now, but for that I need the dialog folder of the new version if it’s possible, so I can start before downloading the whole version. I don’t want to start with the old french files cause the translation was weird and not imersive, I prefer start from nothing.
If you have some questions let me know
Regards

Some news about the translation. I’ve downloaded the last version of the GOF:ERAS2 (2.8 public release) and started the translation from scratch. Try to made a really immersive translation cause the original french version of COAS looked like a google translation.
I have a first question and perhaps a suggestion to change something in the Common_rumours.h file. In the file a NPC is refereed as “John Avory”, but the real name of the pirate was “John Avery”. Is the mistake intentional cause a selectable character is already named “John Avery” or is it a mistake in the original text file?
Actually I use Avory in the translation but Avery seems to be more accurate.Any suggestion ? -

Good luck with this effort. Sounds like a lot of work. There is one very knowledgeable member who communicates with me regularly via email from French Canada. I think he would enjoy such a translation. Phillipe from PA worked on Ackmod and used to be a member of the GOF mod team there. He was instrumental in helping me figure out how to port new colonies into our game. Great guy. We also plan to use the floating forts (they don’t look like they are floating when in the game – but like little rock islands) from the Ackmod.
The only thing I didn’t like about Ackmod was that vending stands and shipyards would have a huge amount of the same exact items/ships available. I remember going to shipyards and finding a dozen luggers. They would all be the exact same ship with different christened names.
Jeffrey would know how to answer your question better, but I can say from my own experience that I always stayed away from changing “proper” names in the game because it could break quests.

That is a mistake from the original game, for one of the quests (Low/Sea Wolf). I just now corrected it, so yes, you may change to Avery to match the log text for that. In an interesting coincidence, the original game had many mismatched names for Low(Loy, Lew, Law, Low) that I corrected awhile back, but I did not notice that Avery one.
Thanks much for your effort. This will be great.
Keep in mind, the game struggles with different codepages and does not deal with UTF8 very well. I put in a way to define reading .ini files (with a special value to indicate UTF), but it does not read the bits at the beginning of a file (like most modern programs), because it would ruin the compiling of many of the script files saved as a mix (due to the Russian comments), so it is important that when you change the .h and .ini files, that you save as ANSI, because I think UTF makes some of the ASCII values for accented characters a different value than ANSI and they don’t always map correctly.
Also, your translation to French, since there are many accented characters, may require an updated fonts.ini and font.tga.tx texture file to correctly map some characters, as some accented characters may be missing in what we have now.

I very well know Phillipe, so if you can say him I’m here know I would be very happy to have some news of him. I know he prefer play in French, as a lot of French people have a sort of problem with English language. Some of historical grudge about Jeanne d’Arc or for French Canadians the love of their roots.
I understand the problem with quest for modified characters names so if the mistake stay in the English version it will stay in the French version too. not a problem at all.

ahoy buccaneers !
It’s a long time I don’t translate an AOP2 mod and some of my knowledge of files have disappear … bad luck.
So if a kindly captain would tell me where to find all the text files related to interface (interface, items, ship models, foods, PC and nation description, etc … ) I can’t find them in the text folder and I remember it was originally placed in another folder named interface in my memory but in the interface folder only .c files no .h
In priority I need to find the ships model names cause in quest lines I must translate them on the two files at the same time to not forgot one of them(for some of them, I will try to keep nationality related names when it’s obvious and translate when the name is something like courier cause a courrier is another type of ship in French (postal ship).
The translation advance slowly cause this week I’m clearing my own ground at the Senegalese method (machete and pickaxe)… I’m looking for a chainsaw but it’s hard to find one here.I have two chainsaw in France, what kind of timber am I?
