Hi all!
I’ve been made aware of GoF through recommended videos on YouTube, after seeing playthroughs of Pirates Gold for PC. Love that game, but craved more. A few years ago, I really got into the Age of Sail, and absolutely loved Black Sails even with their perfect teeth. I’ve known of Age of Pirates for a long time, though of course it is infamous for bugs/crashes. I didn’t want to delve back into Assassin’s Creed 4, because the online requirement and other crap that took away from the game experience. Anyway, to the point…thank you MK and to the development team for doing all of this. It feels fantastic to get into a pirate game that is immersive, huge, and STABLE, as well as the attention to detail on the ships.
I’ve had a good start following YouTuber GrumpyScamp’s lead with a John Strong playthrough. It will probably be a long time before I’m ready to tango with other ships, so I’m working on leveling my fencing, and I want to get officers assigned first and foremost before attempting combat. I didn’t get a very good stat roll with the brig on her cannons; max is 4 lbs, so along with upgrading her armament proper at a shipyard, I should also look at other upgrades as I’ll probably stick with the brig for quite a while. A lot of work to be done. Fortunately, a few runs in Antigua’s cave along with random bandits has yielded nice loot; I already have in excess of 200k on hand, with 110k generating 3% in the bank.
Troubles so far after one evening of play…finding officers. I’ve tried multiple night stays at the tavern, with jungle-running in between. I’ve only been able to get one fighter and a navigator. If anyone has suggestions for finding officers, I’ll be happy to hear ’em 🙂

Welcome to the forum. Glad you dropped by.
If playing ERAS, I usually just start asking the other “hero” types (they are the same characters you can select from at New Game) to join me. If the agree, then you get them and their ship…sell their ship and reassign them as a fighter or ship officer if you need those positions filled. I think because we have so many other NPC heroes running around, they fill up the tavern slots so the other “normal” officers you can usually select in COAS or GOF are reduced due to capacity issues in the tavern.

Maaaaan…that sounds like it would be a huge help. No telling how many captains I met in the tavern! I’m acting on that advice next session, for sure.

Heh…well, it worked. The best one of the bunch was Claude Duval, who had 100 in Gunnery. I now only need a ship’s surgeon for my flag. I did try many in-game days to get officers to spawn in the tavern, but it just wasn’t working. Also, as things worked out, I have a female bosun, and she’s damned good at it; before I could heave-to on a Dutch Galleon, I already had an indicator allowing boarding operations to commence lol

Well, Oldtimer,
that might be it but, I believe that if the other heroes joined you is because they trust that your decisions will be more profitable than theirs. And welcome PapaWulf! Hope you enjoy the game as much as I do!
Also, one little tip, try and get another ship to your fleet, one that has a high cargo and crew capacity so you can take on those higher lvl merchant ships and have space to carry their booty, the extra crew can come in clutch against galleons that have massive crews, so just before boarding them take the maximum crew from your companion and board the enemy, but don’t forget to carry extra weapons for them cause if not they will be useless.-

Right there with ya, bro, thanks! I tried posting screenshots of my first prizes, and one of them was a Dutch fast galleon. Got a sloop with it as well; I lured them into an English 3rd rater’s guns hidden around a corner, and our combined attack made them strike their colors. Named the galleon ‘Diligent’, and it’ll serve as a tank while I maneuver for grapeshot attacks at the enemy’s stern.
