Sorry Craig,
I’ve been out of the loop in the middle of nowhere. Not much connectivity in Drummond Idaho.
I was hoping by now I would have other people posting and contributing. Oh well.
I have a bunch more stuff ready to go up today and tomorrow including new screens.
Try opening a Flickr account. Its free and part of Yahoo. I have a pro account that I pay 30 bucks a year for but its because I have so much stuff going up all the time. They should pay me now. My account is approaching the 2 million views benchmark.

I should mention that I got the Centurion and the Balandra both working correctly now. The problem was the Sailorpoints files had bad coords from the converter. I built a new file by hand for the Balandra and did a substitution on the Centurion that doesn’t quite match up but is ok for now. I will built a new file from scratch later. For now the ship works perfectly with no lag whatsoever.
Here are some reworked yacht skins I did. I have an additional yacht model in game now that looks more English in her bow. So I went ahead and jinned up new skins for both a Dutch and English Yacht. Six new ships altogether (actually I reused one of the old Dutch skins). So 5 new skins in all that are all shown in these screenshots. The rigging and model itself for both of these yachts is noticeably different. The Dutch yacht is renamed Staats Yacht in the game. Enjoy! MK

I cannot comprehend the possibilities, do you realize you could create to single most complete carribean sailing game in gaming history?! I bet the PA! guys are already grinding their teeth at what you have accomplished. How goes the saying? Lets see who has the last laugh! Truly yet again astounding what you managed to accomplish!

These are Yo Ho Ho’s (Sir Anthony Deane) on dezeeroovers new ships. The first one here is the Crown – an English Restoration 3rd rater – and the next is an English restoration era scout class Frigate or 6th rater.
Yo Ho Ho kindly gave me permission via email to use all of his ships in Gentlemen of Fortune! Thanks so much Yo Ho Ho!
These will be in the new upcoming update and I have made new skins for Hull2 Hull3 so there are several authentic historical variants for each ship. Wait till you see these. They are NICE!!!

One of the prettiest water types in my opinion. Also many beautiful skies in this game…and beautiful enemy squadrons coming out of the mist… You can never get too much mist in games that takes place outdoor, the dramatic effect is simply unbeatable.
The newer flag animations look odd. I applaud the initiative and effort to create a more realistic movement in lighter winds but the flag looks a bit distorted.

Maltacus! Nice screen shots man! Thank you for posting them. I noticed you like those sky and water combinations and a little haze on the horizon. I can tell you that when I first took on the task of changing our waters, weather and sky that eliminating haze was one of my top priorities to give the Caribbean the lighter brighter look it has in reality.
Haze now usually only occurs first thing in the morning. I am sure you will be excited to know that in addition to the water that Jeffrey and I continue to overhaul, improve and play with, one of the mods I have been working on for a LONG time is to double the amount of sky boxes that we have now. Just as with a few of the existing sky boxes, these new ones are stunning and I am using REAL actual pictures of breath-taking skies that I took during my last three trips into the Caribbean in the last two years. I can wait to reveal my work for everyone. If you like the skies now, you will LOVE what is just ahead.
So let me ask you – what screen shot application are you using that gives you those cool frames around your pictures?
So for tonight, here are some from me.
I just love playing as the new character Alonso Ramirez in the game and am continuing to make all of the different breastplates show up on this character. I have never played as long as a Spaniard before and am simply loving it! Just having finished the first part of the Morgan quest, Tenochtitlan and the Enchanted City quests I am getting ready to play through the Spanish Quest line – the first time I’ve ever done it in all of these years and the only national questline I’ve never done. I am SO excited!
Here he is in the simple breastplate with his officers. Sun’s in his face so doesn’t quite look as good as normal.
and here he is in the Merchant’s clothes
Captured this heavy French Trader who came out of Fort de France from quite a distance away to help out a patrol that tried to stop my convoy.
And some fighting!
The FLYING DUTCHMAN taken on by my Spanish Frigatta Olandesa a late model Spanish galleon built along Dutch lines.
This Hollander was in port and I couldn’t resist a shot of her stern
and last the favorite ship in my current fleet, the captured English Scout Frigate with all Bermuda upgrades. Man is she ever fast. My thanks again to Sir Anthony Deane/YoHoHo for giving us with his permission to import his fine English models into our game! They are SO awesome! This particular one has captured my heart and after comparing her to some paintings of Dunkirk raiders I have decided that with some modifications and reskins to make another new unique ship variant out of her that will be the big sister to the Flemish Privateer and the Zabra. Think of this ship with Spanish colors and decoration – which will be called “Dunkirker” or Dunkirk Raider. Coming soon!

Love the narrative and screen shots Maltacus! Very entertaining.
So just so you know, there is a mod option to go to realistic ships available at shipyards which gives much LESS of a choice in variety to purchase.
Jeffrey and I have been discussing my cannon mod in detail and he has said that everything I want to achieve is very doable – to include separate interfaces for Bronze guns and Iron guns and which sizes will be available to what nationalities and in what ports.
SO in that same vein, it may be possible for me to change the ships utilities file which governs which ships are available for sale at what level – and make it also govern which ports have what types of ships available for sale.
BTW those new frigate skins you gave me were all put into that last update. Thanks for those. They are nice and your comments about wood coloring on the rails is not unrealistic. Many ships coated certain areas with nothing by flax or linseed oils. So the natural wood colors would have been seen in these cases. Yellow and gold were just very popular and easy to get during this era.

Thanks once again for a truly interesting narrative! I always love reading about your experiences and the very creative way that you bring them to life Maltacus!
Now here’s a little picture of me going up against an entire Treasure Flota I encountered at the tip of Cuba bound for Havanna. Stupidly I attacked and lost two of my best ships and captains. I sunk two of the treasure galleons and an additional war galleon. I captured two treasure galleons and had to scuttle one of them after looting it because it was too damaged to get away. I also captured one War Galleon which was in pursuit and refused to give up. After rounding my fleet back up and selling the prizes and loot – I barely broke even. I wont attack another treasure fleet unless I have bigger, better ships and more of them. Lesson learned the hard way. I am lucky to have got away and lived!

Some new screenshots from my successful run in with a Spanish Treasure fleet. I had three very large ships full of men and two middling sized ships with upgrades. I was leaving Portobello as part of a Governor’s quest when suddenly the treasure fleet emerged. There were 21 ships in the Flota this time. 37 is the most I’ve encountered in one and Jeffrey made it possible to encounter up to 50 in a treasure fleet!!!
Only three of them got away. The rest were either sunk (one blew up their powder magazine to damage me and prevent capture – which worked as I had to transfer my flag to another ship), two others surrendered and I let them go after plundering. I captured three of their best ships to include the most powerful. An additional ship I captured was sunk by the Spaniards but I was able to retrieve my captain.
Two of the three that escaped were their other most powerful ships which went and hid under the guns of the fort (new AI behavior Jeffrey and I developed and he made happen in the game).
My ships were too damaged to take the last ones and most of them were dis-masted. Rock solid – no crashes. Great fun. Here’s some screens of before and after and with a captured French Flagship “Corounne” which was the most powerful ship they had in their Flota. I plan to upgrade her and use her! Love the skin of this one. There are five skins total for her and three of them are my own – like the one you see here. MK
Heading straight for me and they have the wind behind them.
Their last four ships running under the guns of the fort…
plundered and sunk my last treasure ship right under the guns of the fort while taking fire from two sides…
Captured and repaired flagship of the flota – and my stealth is so good I managed to sneak into a Spanish port under a false flag to do it!!! HA HA!!!
My beloved and fully upgraded “Wing’ed Flyte” a heavily modified Dunkirk Raider

So I can’t get the regular screenshots thread to open on this forum. Sometimes it will open in a private window. According to domain support it looks as if the code for that link/window has been corrupted. They are looking into it. When I asked how it could have become corrupted (attack perhaps?) they wouldn’t comment.
Considering how much traffic the screenshots thread gets and all of the spammers that have tried to comment there, it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if some hater hacked into that thread and screwed it up despite all of the protection on this website.
I even wondered if others had tried to post screenshots and couldn’t so gave up. Amyway until domain support gets back to me I thought the best way to keep on going is to simply start a new screenshots thread and throw up my latest pics. I would encourage others to please join me in this so I don’t feel so alone here. LOL MK

WOW Congratulations! I set the rarity pretty high on that although I have seen it in markets before for an unfathomable sum. I consider it one of the best easter eggs in the game. To find it naturally in a chest would be like winning the lottery. To my knowledge you are the first person to acquire it. I have never got it myself.
I also see that you have one of the best swords and one of the best pistols in the whole game and you are only at level 7! Those are not even supposed to show up yet. Did you take that from someone else (NPC captain) or was it in random loot?
Thanks for sharing!

There a few things I’d change though: the font, the style of ‘ERAS’, and usually I’m not a fan of photorealistic logos, I like them to be someway stylized.

So I am in the process of updating the site stories, content, etc… and decided it was time to show a teaser of my nearly completed skins and texture work for the last ship Orazio got to me that will be in the next update.
In addition, there are some others from my testing play and a bunch of my new favorite ship in the game, Orazio’s beautiful Spanish Galleon (Bjorn Landstrom Madrid model).
Once all this is done its back to getting more new locations in the game.

Orazio textured two hulls and said I could do more, so on this third version I just used the common Spanish navy chevrons on the darker hull. LOVE IT!

Well skin number 1 for the last ship in the update is finished. The others will be done tonight or tomorrow.
Really proud of this one. The only thing she seems to be missing is a taffrail flag pole. Perhaps Orazio will attach one for me? I am getting pumped about this after so much personal tragedy. I am starting to feel motivated and forgetting about all the horrible stuff in my life. Orazio’s galleon helps me so much. I can escape this world temporarily a few hours at a time!
Some of the best window textures I’ve ever done – much different than the originals – compare them with the earlier screenshots.MK

That is Kris Wood’s Centurion. In the game its called English 64 gunner.
You will not find it in shipyards but extremely rarely. I recommend cruising outside English harbors at a distance and using your spyglass to see what ships are in the harbor. If you see one of these beauties, run up your pirate flag and they will come out to fight you and then simply take the ship you want. Better have good ships though capable of the task. This is how I get the ships I want if I can’t buy them legitimately or get them via pirates.
SIGH, thanks for posting a screenshot Samir. Wish other people would. I just put a bunch more up on my photostream on flickr

Thanks for the feedback Orazio!
Yes there is some symbolism here. The two MER-LIONS and background are English from the old East India Company docks. The hourglass (which I think I am going to change for a better one I found), is found on so much piratical symbolism – momenti mori, Contemporary Books, flags, gravestones, etc… meaning your time is now up. The fonts are just a common period style from the 17th century, but I am certainly willing to entertain other fonts which are correct for the time.
Any further recommendations on font, style, etc are appreciated.
Also I am certainly willing to entertain other logos if people want to give it the old college try and show us their interpretation on our theme here. Make certain not to put Age of Pirates in the logo anywhere.

@ Malticus, Wow Dude screenshots! Awesome!!! Thanks for sharing mate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah as I wrote earlier in this topic, the site caused new responses to post in the middle when I added new screenshots – after I combined the two screenshots topics. (don’t know why????) When our website is rebuilt by a professional (SOON in negotiations now), it will be fixed. My response only posted to the bottom because I replied to your message.
Good Point on a tutorial for how to do screenshots, what utilities/tools to use, and how to get them on the site here, etc… I will do that for everyone. You’re right about the parent links being messed up and that will be fixed. However, as far as visibility is concerned I don’t think you can get more visible than a prominent link to it almost at the top of the main page.
Yeah something is definitely wrong with your game. Those flags should not look like that. When you get the full update I am certain that will go away.

My post disappeared, trying again…
Application? Hehehe, take a closer look at the island maps in your own game, modernknight :).
I actually agree that the weather is too foggy sometimes, it feels almost more like northern Europe than the Caribbean.I have edited a couple of frames saved as .tga files so the empty space is transparent. I have a couple of pictures of matching size to paste screenshots into and then the frame on top of it. Extremely quick and easy, all in the freeware GIMP. I use to do that for all game stories I post nowadays so if I get the time to make one for this (which considering the fact that I have been longing for this kind of game for two decades is quite likely) I’ll definitely rely on something like that to make the pictures better and show more.
Sir Edward Spragge has made a point of trying to make up for his past failures by joining sides with Edward Spragge junior after repeated attempts at persuasion. Fun family activities during the 17:th cetury include hunting pirates outside Port of Spain.

Two beautiful ships but each others opposites in many ways.
The Veinard Sloop looks good as well but it is rather round when you view it from above, despite being built for speed.
Admiral Spragge: How is it that you guys always manage to sheath your cutlasses before I do when the battle is over? Are you all in some advanced plot to undermine my image as an impressive leader?
The sixth rater is one of the best models in the game. It’s not the best ship but take the time to buy one just to be able to admire the windows that you can actually see through and spy on the carpet and desk inside the captains cabin. The rigging is rather frustrating though, since you can’t fire forward with full sails without tearing up the sail below the bowsprit.
The other shortcoming is the poor performance against the wind. Catching up with a pesky schooner earlier in the game can take forever!

WOW! I am really enjoying your screenshots Maltacus! Thanks for sharing. I am going to have to look into GIMP I guess because I just love those borders and your screens almost look like they are out of a story or a comic book – SO COOL!
I love your narrative along with the pictures about the Spraggues. SEE this is what I have been writing about in terms of gamesmanship using the raw materials we are providing with characters. You have governed the relationships you want to have based on the character(s) you’ve chosen.
I myself thought that – “wouldn’t it have been great if Daddy Sprague would somehow have taken an interest in his son’s career?”. From studying the pair, I think that the elder Spragge may have – but indirectly.
It was obviously too late for him to continue to build upon that even if he intended to, because of his blood lust to find and kill Admiral Tromp – which led to his own death in battle.
I guess he stayed true to his words to the king that he would either find and kill Tromp next time or die trying. So fascinating. So sad. He was a great man, a great admiral, and an extremely interesting historical personality.
I myself when I have been playing as Alonso Ramirez have not hired any English or French heroes/captains/characters and refuse to do business with them. I have even avoided the Dutch somewhat in my current game and 95 percent of my officers and fighters are Spaniards. I even refuse to recruit from towns other than Spanish towns. I have completely got into character.
Eventually when we get some of the new quest lines going we will do much more with these historical personalities – but for now – we have game-play options that allow us to play the game the way you and I (and I am certain other too) are playing it. Thanks again for sharing! So much fun!

Sadly the admirals ambitions met an untimely end as I played when being too distracted last night and rushed ahead of my (admittedly lazily passive) officers during a boarding and got surrounded by Spanish marines. I can’t bring myself to play on when a character has died one time.
Just to clarify for anyone reading this: GIMP does not contain any frames or stuff like the ones I use in my pictures, it is things I have made myself out of the games interface (the maps as I hinted about). GIMP – like Photoshop and similar picture editors – is what I use to work with pictures.
Since you’re interested I’ll see if I can mail you the frame pictures, don’t know how large they are.
I really agree about the role palying aspects making the game, well any person-based game, to be the best it can be.
The very nice French Brigantine, a notably quick and tasteful trader. It has lovely deck textures, a shame that the rest is not equally awesome. The armed schooner is another really nice ship, very naval-like painting for the English and Spanish. The dramatic red and black looks a bit blurry and just dark from a distance unless the weather is really clear but if you come closer she is clearly highly detailed.
Lying in wait for a pirate pinas to approach the local fort. The skies are so good…
– Captain, the pirates are approaching! What are your orders?
– Hm? Oh, yes, well, send for my pencils and paint…and cut some canvas from the reserve sails…have to prioritize. Oh, the battle? Well, carry on, as you were and so on…- This reply was modified 6 years, 10 months ago by Maltacus.

Got your email Maltacus. Thank you for the pointers and the frames. I will definitely be playing with them. I just DL’d a new free version of D3Dgear today as well which possibly might improve the movie issues I have been having. We will see if screenshots are improved as well.

I have tried out editing ships textures for the first time by redecorating the new red and black Frigatta Olandesa (wonderful new addititon, thank you so much) with red railings and changing the fences going from port to starboard from green to matching red. What do you think of it? I find the yellow reelings far too light and bright, even a more red “golden” yellow stands out very much.
Currently there are two variations with dark wood and dark green. It would be cool to have one that matched one hull of the Primera Tasa Espanola, so you could have a matching fleet, like the various English orange and black frigates and line ships, and the new excellent English wood-yellow-black ones. I’m personally no fan of the dark green and painted brown varieties of the Frigatta Olandesa and would replace them with the first rate’s black, wood and red themes but each to their own.

Nice shot Maltacus.
I am also in love with the Olandesa.
To answer your questions, the only reasons the colors you see are the way they are is because of my historical research. Those are the colors that were actually used. However as far as railings are concerned, red and black were indeed both often used on Spanish naval ships.
PLUS: our mod is not 100 percent historically correct by any means. It is something I strive for but we have ships, weapons and items that are not 100 percent period or authentically correct. We have about 10 percent of our characters that are fantasy or fictional characters as well. So I would guess we are the 85 percent correct level and that is pretty darned good IMHO.
So lets put your new skin in the game mate! I am exited to have someone besides myself make awesome skins. Send me the files and we will make a skin number 5… or is it six now – I forget LOL.
BTW you realize the Primera Tasa Espanola has four separate skins right? Are you talking about the black one?
I finished porting the new Dunkirker or Ferrol Raider into the game tonight. Here are some pics of skin 1 as a teaser. The coat of arms and some of the decorations on her stern are from the Spanish Galician town of Ferrol which is quite famous and I think our Spanish players and enthusiasts will be excited about that.
Here is her ship’s bio:
Dunkirker {
This heavy Flemish/Spanish Scout class privateer frigate is considered a hybrid raider developed in the last four decades of war and commerce raiding against Spain’s North Sea enemies – namely Holland until 1648 – and since then England and France. Agile, extremely fast, and well armed, this middling class warship can keep up with and overtake smaller privateers, but at the same time – still slug it out with larger warships that should ordinarily be out of her class. These ships banded together in privateer wolf-packs are an absolute menace to ocean going commerce. Originally built in Dunkirk and Ostend, these ships have been copied and improved upon by Galician shipwrights and many are now built on Spain’s northwestern corner – primarily in the Shipyards of Ferrol. So impressed have Spanish naval authorities become with these little ships that the crown is beginning to invest in an arsenal now at Ferrol. Perhaps one day it will become one of the most important arsenals and shipyards in the Empire. Many say these ships are copies of the English Scout Frigates, however that simply cannot be the case when one considers that they have been being built for a much longer time than their English equivalents. Their proud Galician and Basque builders will also tell you that the English have yet to uncover all of the secrets of their superior speed.

Nice little hint about the scout frigate there in the description.
They painted their ships brown? How tasteless. Is there a web source/pictures about these ships and their looks? I don’t know where to look at all to find out more about Spanish ships from this age.
The tealish green does not look too bad when combined with lighter wood (hull 1) so I’m thinking that the green-dark wood could be altered by adding another type of wood rather than another color if green is what they were. The brown paint, perhaps there could be an all-wood version instead?
I was partially inspired by your altered description to explain the new stern decorations, assuming that for example with gold and red on the stern there would have been some equally bright red along the sides. And with the artful galleons before them and things like the San Felipe a little later it did seen plausible.
About the latter; I was thinking about all the hulls except the new with purple in it. Not exact uniformity but the same colors:It isn’t a replica of the first rate painting but my impression is that if you see it together with hull 1-3 of the first rate you feel that they belong to the same faction. The black paint is copied from it.
The hull with the stern gallery in the picture I was thinking of painting in matching red, to create one frigatta olandesa that is a lavish flag ship, and matches the red-and-wooden first rate and perhaps the export warship with red gallery. I’ll keep trying to look things up and send what I have once they’re all done.- This reply was modified 6 years, 9 months ago by Maltacus.

I love what you’ve done with those Maltacus.
As far as online sources go I don’t know of any. However, in my own library I have EXCELLENT sources. Not only do I have original access to work orders for specific paints in “Six Galleons for the King”, I also have Chatterton’s 1924 book on Ship decorations which covers color conventions for different navies. That book and my own familiarity of contemporary paintings really gives me an edge on coloring these ships correctly.
Not only that but I also have the Museo de Madrid’s two volume set in Spanish on Galleon Documentation which also covers coloring. Add to this the Museo de Madrid’s book and plans on the Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion y de las Animas which also includes correct coloring and we also have contemporary paintings of her – and we have REALLY good clues as to how these ships were both painted and decorated. As I detail in my ship description, Nithard took over administration during that time and many of the newer commissioned ships hardly received any decoration at all. This is why you see several of the skins that are extremely plain.
I am going to use almost everything you sent me via email. We have other ships which have 7 and even 9 different skins, so it will be the same for this one. Jeffrey’s brilliant code changes have allowed us to open up specific ships to having basically limitless options for appearance randomly generated based on the number of skins we give to them.
I am going to change the stern decorations on a couple of the ones you added for variety sake.
I haven’t started using your frames yet because I have been trying to make new videos of our current state for an update video and some Lets Play GOF ERAS2 vids showing how to start out your game and also a series on how to get through the Spanish Quest line.
Anyway, here are some pictures from me (and Orazio) – first off a teaser of one of the new ships coming soon – WE FINALLY HAVE A Challoupe in the game!!! The pirates used the heck out of these ships along with the Barque-Longue. Now we have both. Many of the starting characters will be changed to this ship (half and half Barque-Longues and Challoupes). You can thank the fine research of Bennerson Little for this addition. These were used WAY more by pirates than tartanes ever were.
Next are more teasers of the new Dunkirker/Ferrol Raider – a different version – recently finished skin.

What a shame, but I’m not surprised. There is precious little reading about the Caribbean easily available in Sweden, pretty much only focused on the Baltic region and the Dutch and English fleets as they intervened a lot.
Glad you liked the new skins. I look forward to see the new ships, that Challoupe was cute. Will it be of similar size as the small sloops and schooners (about 70-100 crew)?
A funny thing, the Spanish chevrons look just like a kind of road sign here. It has become a joking point between me and my wife – the Spanish ships are sometimes from the department of transportation, obviously more influential than anyone could believe…
I took a liking to changing the textures, it is quite rewarding with much improvement from simple measures like copying from other skins or changing colour tone and brightness. Currently I’m playing a campaign with Manuel Pardal who has been collecting Frigata Olandesas but maybe the next character should focus on patrouille frigates or something that I have thought about repainting as well. -
January 30, 2018 at 8:17 am #5836modernknight1Keymaster
Well I suppose I can see why you would think they look funny when they are a commonly seen phenomena.
However, they are extremely accurate for the Spaniards of this time in their Naval Transportation department. LOL
Usually just as the pure red battle flags identified an admiral, commander or royal aboard, the chevrons were usually on the group leaders ships. So you would see them on the Capitana and Almiranta ships as well as any ships captained by Grandees.
So I finished the final skins for the Ferrol/Dunkirk raider and I made five skins for the new Chaloupe. I have changed a lot of numbers tweaking the ships files as well in the last two days to accommodate good suggestions by our audience.
I got all of Maltacus’ new skins for the Olandesa put in as well. I’ve almost got a new female RPC ready to go also.
All of this will be in our first loyalty update which will probably go out to everyone tomorrow. So look for a PM with link active members.
Here’s a few more screenshots from me of the new skins. These are some fun additions! MK

Trying to keep the small lugger between me and the privateer sloop…worked well enough but then the sloop came close enough to board so it didn’t end so elegant.
The levantine ketch, a rarely seen ship with rather good statistics. It is very sturdy for such a small ship and despite its clumsy appearance rather nimble. The ship is bristling with swivel guns, great for fighting other small ships.
A nice sea battle. Dutch and English duelling and Manuel Pardal sneaking in and picking of the English piece by piece.

Thanks for the screenshots Maltacus. I hope others enjoy them as much as I do. I LOVE that large battle scene. I just regret I can’t make the image larger.
OMG that last one is HILARIOUS! LMAO
So here’s some from me. First is from my Spanish game with Alonso Ramirez. I just finished the Brig Queen quest and got Daniele Shephard as an officer.
Next I started a new game out as an Englishman with the new Chaloupe. I was trying to sneak into the bay east of Cumana across from Port of Spain and a Spanish naval Ketch went after me. I barely defeated them and lost ALL of my men in the scrape. Still good cargo taken and my Chaloupe could hold more than the ketch. So I still needed to deliver my passenger into Cumana the back way through the jungle because I don’t have a Spanish flag.
I get almost to the beach and notice a large Spanish trading or fishing Tartane making sail to chase me down!
CRAP! I was completely alone, but she was a Negoce Tartane with NO guns. So they were trying to get close enough to board me. I on the other hand had 10 guns and lots of ammunition. My Chaloupe with a wind abaft was able to stay ahead of the Tartane and I pummeled her for hours with everything I had. I knew only a handful of men could be left alive so I made to board her. She had more men alive than I thought and I died. Hopefully they let my passenger make his way. —- after a few saves I was able to overcome the survivors with my SUPERIOR HERO LIKE Sword Skills and Bowstaff skills and my Liger drawing skills. LOL
Gotta love those new English ships from Yo Ho Ho (Sir Anthony Deane) – what a talent! I fall in love each time I see one! MK

”Bah, this is Boddons Landing, a free port backwater. If you’ve seen one brigantine you’ve seen ’em all. What could they have to offer?”
”They have one of those new, modern fast merchantmen. But more, one Frigatta Olandesa, a recently comissioned Spanish two-decker with 62 mighty guns ranging from 32 to 42-pounders! A powerful naval vessel equal to a heavy third rate in the English way of listing them. Not only that, but an English heavy third rater as well, with 64 guns! ”How in Davy Jones unwashed wig did they end up for sale here???”

”Chase frigates aren’t too bad. We have more manpower than with the good old galleon and better maneuvering.”
”The sails are questionably small. Besides, it is a very unrefined ship, all wood and no decorations.”
”One thing at a time now. Look there! There is the battle we have been looking for! English and Spanish naval squadrons fightning it out.”
”So? They outclass us by a wide margin.”
”Yes. The English have the stronger vessels and will blast the Spaniards old galleons apart in time, but those old hulks can carry hundreds of crew and the Spaniards are excellent marines. They will try to board the enemy, as they usually prefer.”
”Hm.”
”Look! That yellowish Englishman must have been borded! Whether she has been taken or not, the crew must be seriously depleted! Wait for it… yes, she is striking her colours! She has been taken by the Spanish but they realise they are too few to get her out in time or stand up in a gunnery duel or another boarding.””The other two galleons seem to be retreating. And the English give chase!”
”As I thought! Hoist all sails! Set course around the English!””Looks to be an old style second rater and a third rate perhaps. Both are following the galleon…”
”Hard to port! We’re going in””Arr! This is the day you will always remember as the day…”
”Jack! I have TOLD YOU to stop saying that! It’s ridiculous!”
”Very well. Surrender and capitulate, give up and bow down to my supreme skill and costly coat!”
”Madmen! Aaaah! Madmen!””Fare thee well, tea drinkers! We thank you for this magnificent gift! What was that? I can’t hear you over the wind carrying us far away from your outdated second rate second rater!”
”Why is everyone so interested in my new ship all of a sudden? Go steal your own ships-of-the-line… Or sail to Boddons Landing, I hear they have a discount this week, hehehe…”

Love the narrative and screen shots Maltacus! Very entertaining.
So just so you know, there is a mod option available in your Mod Options interface window to click “realistic ships” available at shipyards which gives you much LESS of a choice in the variety of ships available to purchase.
Many ships coated certain areas with nothing but flax or linseed oils. So the natural wood colors would have been seen in these cases. Yellow and gold were just very popular and easy to get during this era.

Yeah, I know that. And I always have the realistic settings turned on, so there is some entry missing for those two large ships if they are supposed to be excluded from the open market, which they should in my opinion. Where do you edit the availability in shipyards? Another ship that is a bit strange to see is the large arcadian xebec, which according to the description is a rarity in the Caribbean but appear for sale in most shipyards once you have gained some levels.
I’ve really come to like retexturing ships, to the point where (just like in Medieval II) I almost don’t want to play with a particular unit/ship unless I have redone the unit icon/ship texture myself first. I made some adjustments to the little Dutch frigate and a couple of more skins, I’ll send them later.
Could you make something like an article about ship coloring during the golden age? While I tend to think mostly about what I think would look good I’d like to stick somewhat to historical correctness and historical probability.
A random thought about separate interfaces for different guns: How about a difference between common and high quality iron guns? I’m thinking of England and Sweden for example where metallurgy and gun making improved considerably during the 17:th century and in the English case this resulted in iron guns of good quality, perhaps not on par with bronze guns but much cheaper to produce.

OK Maltacus, Jeffrey and I have discussed it and based on your comments and Oldtimer’s questions about why certain ships are not available we will be adding what ships can be bought to my cannon mod. Bermuda sloops will only be found in – wait for it – BERMUDA! LOL
Good idea on the ship coloring guide. Yes – that sounds like a fun project along with many others I am doing – expect something in the next month – well illustrated using paintings as a guide and also illustrations from some very old books and illustrations from Atlases and journals like Joan Blaeu and Edward Barlow (who actually drew and colored what they were witnessing/seeing in front of them at the time).
So here’s some screenshots from me.
What’s this oddity? Could it be will-o-the-wisp? Ghosts? Or denizens from Bermuda’s Triangle parchance?
Are there any active volcanoes in the Caribbean besides those on the French Leward islands? Cause that just looks like a volcano to me and this is the first time in nine years I have ever seen anything like this in this game.
Love this snow and I love all of the dozens of small ships we have in the game. Orazio is working on a new one for me RIGHT NOW as I write this!

As detailed in the Technical Questions thread I have been experimenting with linking turn rate to the ships actual speed. No speed, no turning. The results are not perfect yet but I find it very much more entertaining than before and more realistic. Here is an unlikely feat by my Dutch protagonist Klaas van Krabdam and his 60-gun Roijael Krab, made possible by the lucky wind and poor enemy cohesion – which were the primary reasons for the outcome of a great many naval engagements throughout history. All told by the poor sailor Hopkins, he who has to come out to spar with beginner captains as you know.
.
Hopkins! What are you doing here? We all thought you had had enough of giving fencing lessons to incompetent captains and set sail for England again?
.
I tried! I even signed on for a British Man-of War, of all things, thinking that the passage should be safer inside the mightiest ship I could find. But nothing works out for poor Hopkins, oh no…
I had been assigned to the Marston Moor, biggest vessel you could imagine. 102 guns, over a thousand crew. Not only that, but she would be sailing with two other 1st rate line ships, and a new and nimble 3rd rater to deal with quicker targets. We were called back from the West Indies but west of Bermuda we fell upon some Spanish traders. Two of them were caught and struck their colours but the rest made a break for it and split. It was the 30th of october and the middle of the afternoon. To our south, there appeared a Dutchman of some fifty or sixty guns, faster than you could imagine. The Royal Crab. She took her sails down when our line opened fire and just lay their and weathered it while our ships struggled to catch the traders. We had our third rater at the fore, the Sparrow with 64 guns, and the 96 gun Iris behind, with us as the third ship and last the 96 gun Henrietta Maria. So! That Crab waited until the wind turned and blew her swiftly west, parallell wo our line. She veered away from our guns then started to turn northward and chase the Henrietta Maria which had broken off to catch one or two of the traders.Meanwhile the Iris and the Sparrow did not tell each other what they were doing and we heard a massive crack, and it was the Sparrows bowsprit that had snapped. So stupid! Now our fastest vessel was hardly any faster than the rest. The crab came at the Henrietta Maria from an angle so they were out of both the aft guns and the broadsides. The Dutch were quite lucky devils, for the wind was perfect for their manoeuvre.
When they were so close that the aft guns would not hit their rigging, the Dutch turned sharply north and reduced sail to manoeuvre better. They could still take advantage of their built up speed.
Then they opened fire and raked the Henrietta Maria point blank. The sight was dreadful but the wind blew strongly now and she had good speed. That is of course until the crab began pouring chain shot across her masts. The Dutch were so nimble they could criss-cross after our ship and fire at every turn when their broadside faced forward.
The Henrietta Maria was steadily gliding away from the rest of us and none could come fast to her rescue for with the Iris and Sparrow tangled and the Marston Moor out of wind to turn we were quite slow. So her captain took a huge risk and turned around to meet us, all the while the crab was murdering her crew with its grapeshot. It didn’t work, for when she came around the wind was staright against her and she could not gain the wind to turn in either direction.
With only two guns against 28 she was beaten bloody and then those vile Dutch boarded and took her, while the Iris was still approaching. It had been about an hour, no more, but constant firing for the whole time.
Not content with massacring our largest crew, the Dutch commandeered the Henrietta Maria and used it as stationary battery to guard the crab and shot at the rigging of the Iris thatw as approaching, while taking shelter behind the first rates heavy oak. The two line ships traded broadsides all evening as the iris made sail south to come around and rake the Dutch.
The Dutch saw the danger, though, and left just a token crew and set out with the crab again, turning almost fully around to the outer side to not lose the wind, and set sail south to intercept the Iris. Her sails were in such poor condition and she so much slower and heavier that the crab seemed to have no trouble floating just into position before her bow and unleash its grapeshot again.
When the Dutch boarded, there was only a skeleton crew left, almost quite literally, and darkness had fallen upon us all. It must have been almost midnight when they took her too.
The Iris was slower and with lesser crew than the Henrietta Maria but sturdier and more easy to turn. The crab could easily replenish the stores from the vast cargo holds of those prizes.
The Sparrow was too late to save the Iris but pressed on none the less, seeking to get close enough to board. The crab turned sharply to meet her but then seemed to reconsider and dropped sial to wait for the Sparrow.
The Sparrow was sailing into the broadside of the crab and while she could more easily change her course to return fire she would have to slow down, and clearly judged it wiser to get close as fast as possible.
Unfortunately the fire never seemed to lessen and casualties mounted to the point that the Sparrow struck her colours.
The MAarston Moor meanwhile was sailing up to shower the Henrietta Maria with her broadsides and strike at the crab. We did not count with the accuracy of the Dutch gunnery, and they tore our sails to shreds so we could not seem to get anywhere we wanted.
Caught in the middle of the half circle formed b the crab and her prizes our captain decided to make a run for it and drift with the currents around Bermuda until we could get repairs underway. It was an optimistic assessment for not only could we not come far with such rags hanging from our masts but the wind had lessened during the night and now in the morning we had not come far at all. And we could see the crab swiftly sailing up to our stern.
She might as well had sailed gently into a docks, so still and immobile did our ship appear. The crab dropped sail when angled so that herbroadside would hit our stern and also our whole starboard side. They did not need to aim at that distance. It was a massacre.
Little wonder our captain called for a ceasefire and ultimately capitulated, but damn him for being so tardy.
Of our entire crew was just me and 71 more that made it. We were sold in Marigot as indentured servants and so I’m back at hacking away at greenhorn captains.
Analysis: Large ships of the line used to be slow but stronger than all due to the high skills of their captain and their ability to turn to match the speed of kiting enemies. Now, they are ships of the line, no more, no less. If caught alone by a nimble opponent with heavy guns, they are in trouble. As I mentioned I think the effects of the turn rate are a bit extreme but on the whole the battle felt much more like the descriptions I’ve read in the history books and ditto sources.
.
In my game big ships get stuck a long time with the fore against the wind (too long time for the moment but I’ll adjust that a bit), which is very interesting. Tacking is a pain, though, which isn’t intended. I suspect the remedy is some sort of turn rate inertia bonus so that a ship with good speed could use it to tack effectively and reach the “other side” and catch the wind again.
I visualize the goal as something like this: Small ships with good Point of sail can start from nothing and still turn decently, but they will depend mostly on the wind for their turn rate. Big ships with square sails (well, kind of all of them…) can not turn as fast from stationary but the trick with them is to build up speed and inertia to be able to tack and turn in battle at the right moment, so handling them should need more skill and understanding of these mechanics from the player. -

Just uploaded a whole bunch (over 80) new screenshots on my Flickr page. Many of these show off some of the new improved/reworked and reskinned ships that will be in the next Loyalty patch and our commercial version. My thanks to Maltacus as I used many of his skins. Probably about one third of the new skins are from him. I’m especially proud of the new Raa/Poutrille Frigate skins as I made some new ones and reworked the grey, orange and blue ones to look much more realistic – they no longer have that fake/toyish look that was bothering me. These are some NICE ones! The Postillionen (20 gun Dutch Fregat) has a number of new really beautiful skins as well and so does the Dunkirk Raider. Some of these ships now have over 10 skins that can be encountered.
Jeffrey and I are also talking about a new feature at the ship yard that will allow you to “repaint” your ship and a different random skin will appear out of those possible. So if you like the stats on the ship but one of the other different skins better, you could keep paying the shipyard until you get it.
Here’s the 83 new screenshots here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/49225014@N05/

REPAINTING ships? Yes! Get to work with that immediately! Could we, speaking of that, add some sort of feature with a customizable flag or set of flags? It would make sense after all if you flew the same jolly roger or a nation flag signifying the same kind of rank that you had been awarded.
.
Couldn’t agree more about the Raa frigate, it is one of the best models but has been cursed with some of the worst textures. The Dutch 20-gunner is also great, it is such a cute ship that I always consider buying one despite commanding a squadron of upgraded third raters.
.
I know I have critizised the colors of some ships (at least I think I have) but what’s really been the core of the issue is that the paint looks both brand new – which is good in some skins but feels wrong if no ships have a dent or scratch from a journey acros the Atlantic or years with sparse maintenance – and that the pain thas too little contrasts and wood details so it looks like plastic or like a much more primitive graphics engine than it really is. I would guess this is similar to what you mean with ship skins looking fake or toyish. -

Hmmm, did not realize this was such a hotly desired feature. It will be in the next update.

So I thought I would share a little album from my recent adventure in “The Island of Justice” – the City of Abandoned Ships. This was great fun for me and only the second time I had ever played the quest – the first time clear back in 2009. Jeffrey fixed bugs and we came up with new log entries and dialogue entries to make the quest play much better and with better clues so that one is not forced to look through “Walk Throughs”. We have been doing this where ever we see broken clue trails that dead end in the game. Take for instance how are you supposed to know you have to find “White Boy” after you are sunk by the Dutchman. Anyway here’s the album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/49225014@N05/albums/72157699725070622
And here are some of my reskins that will be going into the next loyalty update. The last one is a brig I wanted to do my own version of – and I did another repaint where I toned down Mett’s skin to not be such a bright yellow color – looks a lot better and more realistic now. The second ship I reworked is the famous “Dog of War”. There are now five skins available for Dog of War.
Now that Jeffrey has engineered a wonderful repaint option that is available and working in certain larger shipyards with a clearly identifiable button on the GUI (and its expensive), you can now have a variety of choices not only with every encounterable ship in the game – but with quest ships as well! I wanted two darker versions of Dog of War. One that was simple like the original and one that has a French 17th century corvette look. I rather like how she turned out. Anyway here are the new skins. MK

I don’t know why I bother putting these up anymore. Anyway – here are some of the additions in the upcoming huge patch. Yo HO Ho/Reese on PA! gave us his beautiful Peregrine Galley. There is a military RN variant with more guns rated as a small frigate and another with only a few guns that is a small English merchantman. Also the black Snow/Snauw is at the request of Vincent who wanted a version that looked distressed or older. That skin is added to the others that can now be found in game. We are up to eight different variants and with the new paint shop option at certain shipyards you can repaint so many ships in so many different looks. MK – thinking about getting rid of the whole ole MK thing… New front page and historical articles for the website are nearly finished. Aaron
